Hand-Painted Chanderi Lehenga with Kanchli-Inspired Bustier, Cropped Jacket and Organza Veil
Chand Kunwar is one of the most intricately crafted looks from The World of Baisa, where the garment is treated almost as a canvas.
Crafted in Chanderi, the ivory lehenga is covered with highly detailed botanical artwork painted entirely by hand. Rather than repeating a single floral motif, the surface unfolds like a garden, with individual flowers, buds, leaves and stems rendered in varying scales and colours. The painting is layered with mirror work, sequins and gota, allowing embroidery and embellishment to become part of the artwork rather than sit separately on the surface.
Lines of mirror work travel across the lehenga in fluid formations, catching and reflecting light as the skirt moves. This reflective detailing takes inspiration from the luminous interiors of Rajasthan’s palaces and the visual splendour associated with the Sheesh Mahal.
The silhouette is built around a fitted waist and a generously flared lehenga, creating volume and movement while allowing the detailed surface work to remain visible across the expanse of the skirt.
The upper half reinterprets the traditional Rajasthani pairing of the kanchli and kurti through a contemporary lens. A close-fitted bustier forms the inner layer, referencing the traditional kanchli, while the cropped three-quarter-sleeved jacket recalls the kurti worn over it. The jacket is shaped close to the body and finished with hand-painted botanical details, sequins, gota and mirror accents. Its open back and delicate ties bring a lighter, more contemporary character to the traditional reference.
An expansive sheer organza dupatta completes the look. Designed almost as a veil, it falls well beyond the body in a dramatic sweep and is scattered with hand-painted floral details, creating movement without taking away from the intricacy of the lehenga.
The beauty of Chand Kunwar lies in the number of processes that coexist within one composition. Detailed hand painting forms the foundation, after which mirrors, sequins and gota are individually worked into the surface. From a distance, the ensemble reads as a painterly floral landscape. At close range, the craftsmanship reveals itself through hundreds of smaller details, reflections and textures.
It is a contemporary interpretation of Rajasthan where painting, palace architecture, traditional dress and intricate surface craft come together in one modern ceremonial silhouette.

The Soul of the Craft
The soul of every Baavli piece is the artisans and the art. Long before it reaches you, it passes through fingers that have spent a lifetime learning this craft, hands that paint with patience, embroider with feeling, and slow down when the world tells them to rush. Thread by thread and stroke by stroke, they pour something into the fabric: themselves.
This is why no two Baavli pieces are ever truly the same. Each one carries the quiet imprint of the artisan who made it - their mood that day, their hand's own rhythm, their care. It's not a flaw in the process. It's the whole point.
We believe handmade things hold on to emotion in a way nothing else does. When you wear a Baavli piece, you are not just wearing embroidery; you are wearing hours of someone's devotion, the pride of our artisans, and the quiet belief of our entire team that this piece deserved to be made with love, not speed.
That's what makes every piece at baavli an heirloom-worthy piece of art. Not just that it will last, but that it was made to be felt, and passed down with the story still in it.
